Table Runner & Pattern Guide

A runner can define the center of a table while leaving the tabletop visible. It can also add a second texture to a plain cloth. Start with the space needed for plates and serving dishes, then choose the pattern.

Let width follow the setting

Measure the table’s width and consider where the plates will sit. A runner around one third of the tabletop width is a useful visual starting point, but a narrow strip can feel lighter and a wider one creates more of a color block. Compare the runner’s finished width with your actual place settings rather than relying on a room photo.

Calculation example: a 36 in wide tabletop with a 12 in runner leaves 12 in of visible tabletop on either side. This is a layout illustration, not a required ratio or a product fit guarantee.

Choose where the ends finish

For a runner that hangs over the ends, add twice your chosen drop to the table length. An end drop of 6–10 in is one casual option; check that tassels and fringe will clear chair seats. You can also use a shorter runner entirely within the tabletop, framing a centerpiece without a hanging end.

Runner length = table length + (2 × end drop)

Calculation example: a 60 in table with an 8 in drop at each end calls for a 76 in runner. To see how an available 79 in runner would hang, subtract 60 and divide the remaining 19 by two: about 9.5 in per end.

Pick one pattern to lead

If the cloth has a large geometric repeat, let the dishes stay simple. If you already have patterned plates, try a solid runner or an open cotton knotwork texture. A small-scale stripe can sit with a larger motif, especially when both share a color.

Three arrangements to try

Keep it useful once dinner arrives

Lay out a plate, glass and serving bowl before deciding the runner position. Keep loose ends away from candles and use appropriate heat protection under hot dishes. Read the care information for each fabric separately; a textured runner and a printed cloth may need different treatment.
